Section Four: The Communicative Dimension

Section 4 places terminology firmly in the field of communication. A model of communication is developed which accounts for the use of terms. The next subsection examines approaches to terminology as an applied subject and especially the measurement of efficacy of terminology in communication. The last subsection deals with prescriptive aspects of terminology. It describes the many agencies and bodies, national and international, concerne with regulating usage of terminology and critically examinex the merits and disadvantages of standardisation.
