This section presents the theoretical foundations in four subsections. The first outlines a theory of reference which permits the distinction between terms and word, a division which is essential for separating terminology from lexiclology. The other three subsections present a theory of concepts, conceptual relations and definitions. Mindful of the applied orientation of this book it does, however, examine these theoretical questions in the light of actual terminology processing.
