Summary and results

The EAGLET (EAGLES Term bank concept) was introduced, with discussion of constraints on macromodels and micromodels. An initial proposal for a detailed macromodel as a specificatio the EAGLET HyperLexicon was made, and a micromodel was developed as the basis for the EAGLET DB, a terminological relational database derived from the `leaves' of the macromodel. Appendices with summaries of terminological literatur, and with glossary and term list material are included.

The material results so far include the present report, referred to as the EAGLET report, and a prototype implementation of the EAGLET DB on the World Wide Web. These two objects are intended to be the basis of the further consensus-building work on terminology in the spoken language community. It is intended that they will receive a first presentation at the EAGLES Phase II WP4 Workshop in Lancaster UK, subsequently at the WP 5 and 6 meeting in London in January 1998.

The following detailed terminology work will continue into 1998:

  1. The EAGLET DB will be extended to include the entire Handbook glossary and as much of the index as possible, given the constraints on resources.
  2. The EAGLET DB will be extended incrementally to handle the new topics envisaged for the EAGLES Phase II Supplement.
  3. The literature abstracts will be related more closely to the EAGLET report.
  4. Feedback from the community, based on dissemination of this report and availability of the EAGLET DB will be processed.
  5. A ``textbox'' will be attached to the EAGLET DB for comments feedback via CGI file generation or by email.
  6. The area of automatic terminology extraction will be reviewed as a possible extension to the Handbook based procedure defined in this report.
