Spoken language is the foundation of all human communication, and for a student of language it is essential to understand all aspects of spoken language. The goal of this course is to provide an introduction to the modern scientific methods used in analysing the physical aspects of spoken language, i.e. speech itself, including the following:
The class is designed for students of English; students of Linguistics and Computer Science and those interested in speech in multimedia contexts are welcome to take part. Qualifications will be by term paper based on a practical task involving phonological and phonetic description of samples of English dialogue.
