Lehrveranstaltungen finden wieder statt

5 November 1998
I apologise especially to those who have to get up early and travel far.
Look through the class materials, and spend the time you would have spent
in class in doing the following:
- Pick your favourite recipe,
- make a table of the ingredients, with the name of the recipe on the left, then its type, then the quantity required, and the action which you have to perform with it.
Example:
|
1 | olive_oil | cooking_fat | 1 tablespoon | pour_into_frying-pan |
|
2 | frying_pan | utensil | 1 | heat_very_hot_on_stove |
|
3 | egg | high_protein | 2 | beat_and_pour_into_hot_fat |
|
4 | omelette | result | 1 | eat |
Following the instructions which I gave you last week, please
- construct a list of English phonemes with the important allophones, using SAMPA notation (check this out on the web),
- construct a list of pairs of all phonemes as a preliminary to constructing the diphone database -- divide this up among yourselves, e.g. each person takes 4 phonemes (depending on how many are present), and makes a diphone list for each phoneme,
- construct a list of short phrases containing the diphones.
Example (to be extended to include all consonants and vowels:
|
p | p | don't drop pans here |
|
p | t | don't drop tins here |
|
p | k | don't drop cans here |
|
p | b | don't drop bins here |
|
p | d | don't drop dishes here |
|
p | g | don't drop guns here |
|
p | f | don't drop fish here |
|
p | T | don't drop thistles here |
|
p | ... | don't drop ... here |
|
| | |
|
t | p | please cut paper carefully |
|
t | t | please cut tissue carefully |
|
t | k | please cut cabbage carefully |
|
t | b | please cut broccoli carefully |
|
t | d | please cut dynamite carefully |
|
t | g | please cut geese carefully |
|
t | f | please cut feathers carefully |
|
t | T | please cut thistles carefully |
|
t | ... | please cut ... carefully |
Note:
- the diphones should, if possible, NOT be in stressed positions,
- sequences of consonants and vowels may occur both within words and between words -- both contexts should be used!
- some sequences of consonants, such as some of those above, only occur between two words,
- don't allow yourself to be misled by the orthography -- e.g. the `pp' in `happy' is NOT a diphone -- cf. /§hæp§/!
The tasks for this week are:
- carefully read the lecture notes on the web for this week on lexical structure and lexical signs, and prepare questions on these,
- search for dictionaries on the world wide web, and prepare a informal report for next week, so we can discuss how they are constructed.
- pick at least two dictionary entries from any dictionary or dictionaries you have at home, and list the types of lexical informtion they contain (microstructure).
- Write a summary of what we discussed last week.
- Describe the structure of the
(CNN web site).
Note: Next week we will be meeting in the LiLi PC room C01-273 !
