Language and Computers: Introduction to linguistic programming - Anglistik (Do 10-12)

Goals: Basic concepts of programming will be introduced in the context of three practical tasks which are relevant the language professions:

  1. Represent and automatically re-format texts in `computer-readable' notation (including construction of interactive World Wide Web pages);
  2. Construct interactive computer Internet dictionaries;
  3. Design an automatic grammar checker for simple English sentences.

Addressees: Students of English, Grundstudium, primarily M.A. but also Lehramt; suited to students who are interested in using modern Internet technology in their future careers. Knowledge of how to use a Word Processor on a PC is presupposed.

Methods: There will be introductory lectures and exercises; all students are expected to prepare practical material, test results outside class and present results in class. Students will work together in teams of two or three.
