- It has also been claimed that there are in fact restrictions which
go beyond these substructures. e.g there is no English syllable of
the form sCVC where the Cs have the same coronal specification.
- However, Davis (1992) presents evidence on the basis of a
computerised lexicon which refutes these claims.
- Selkirk (1982) discusses the immediate constituent (IC)
principle of phonotactics and proposes an underlying hierarchical
organisation of syllable structure into onset and rhyme which further
branches into peak and coda (cf. Pike & Pike, 1948 for an earlier
proposal of this type of syllable organisation). This underlying
hierarchical structure expresses a distributional "chunking" in
phonological strings which can be represented in a linear model.
