Search for information about idioms, for example...

1. on the web,
2. in idiom dictionaries,
3. in books and articles about idioms, and
   1. begin a bibliography on this topic,
   2. beginn a collection of idioms as a basis for your own idiom dictionary,
   3. begin to collate your own idiom corpus.
4. Definitions of idioms.
   For understanding idioms in scientific discourse, the following book is highly recommended:
   Eike von Savigny (1970, 5th edition 1980). Grundkurs im wissenschaftlich en Definieren. München: DTV.
