Previous: Speech editing - practical
Using the results of the signal editing class, we will produce recordings
of individual words for an electronic dictionary which contains examples
of actual pronunciations of the words in it.
Procedure outline:
- Select a short speech speech file in WAV format (about 10-20 words).
- Transcribe it orthographically (`dictation') in a Word file.
- Using COOLEDIT, cut out the words in the file, placing them in separate files. If the same word occurs more than once, number the files, e.g. the1.wav, the2.wav, ...
- Make each word in the transcription into a hyperlink which points to the corresponding audio file.
- Test your transcription by clicking on the words.
- Save your file with a short appropriate name, e.g. "news1-txt.doc".
- Make a copy of the file, and arrange the words in the transcription in a list in alphabetical order, each word on one line (except that if there are duplicate words, put them on the same line).
- Save this lexicon file wit ha short appropriate name, e.g. "news1-lex.doc".
- Now save these two files in HTML format ("Save as ...", "Speichern unter ..."), and re-open them, first using Netscape Navigator (NN), then MicroSoft Internet Explorer (MS-IE).
- Compare the results in MS-Word, MS-IE and NN.
- Extend your document to include your own version of this procedure description.
