Navigation: search engines (Tom Alby)

Points for discussion:

  1. Navigation is just one form of interaction with a hypertext. What other forms are there?
  2. Which navigation strategies are there? We have already discussed top-down-left-right link structures as author-oriented navigation strategies.
  3. What about reader-oriented navigation strategies? How many user-oriented navigation strategies can you identify?
  4. One kind of navigation strategy is the use of a search engine. What search strategies do you think search engines use?
  5. One search strategy for answering this question is to ask Tom Alby :)
  6. List a selection of different search engines and summarise the search strategies used by them.
