Types of criterion

• Declarative criteria for multilingual hypertext analysis and production:

  Content (Information structure):

  - What is the document about?
  More technically: the semantic domain, the world, the universe of discourse (objects, sets of objects, relations between objects, events and states pertaining to objects), and the pragmatic function with respect to users, their intentions, goals, purposes.

  Architecture (Document structure):

  - What are the parts of the document?
  More technically: the structure, the `text syntax' of the document, how the document is organised as a pattern of constituents.

  Rendering (Presentation structure):

  - What does the document look and sound like?
  More technically: modality selection, audio properties, graphical properties, layout, font, highlighting, colour, shapes.

• Procedural criteria for multilingual hypertext analysis and production:

  Navigation: in production, in reception:

  - How do I access the document? More technically: how do I traverse the graph structure (tree, circle, lattice, etc.) in terms of which the parts of the document are operationally organised?
