Description

The basic philosophy of this course is `learning by doing': qualifications will be awarded on the basis of a practical project in the specification, design and implementation of multilingual hypertext documents of a wide range of types (from dictionaries through translations to experimental cyber-literature).

On the theoretical side, reference will be made to traditional and modern text-linguistic and semiotic work in order to develop a model of document structure, meaning and pragmatics to guide the production process. In this connection, multilingual documents are a particularly interesting challenge, not only as an essential part of the European information society but also as a testimony to complex and multidimensional human interaction. Our use of hypertext techniques in class will aim to do justice to this multidimensionality.

In the first half of the term, the emphasis will be on specification and design of documents, including the analysis of high quality hyperdocuments on the internet and elsewhere. In the second half, the emphasis will be on the realisation of the specification and the design, and the development of `products'.

A literature list will be available on my teaching web-site before term starts.

For the time being, further information can be acquired from the overview of previous classes on related topics.
