The class will take place as a study group; the main topics will be:

• Phonetics and Phonology in Language Acquisition.
• Phonetics and Phonology in Speech Recognition.

Preparation

1. Download and install the CoolEdit signal editor software from the web.
2. Make a bibliography and a web site list for your chosen topic.
3. Think about what kinds of data you will need for practical work.
4. The following standard handbook will be used as a reference text:
   D. Gibbon, R. Moore, R. Winski, eds. (1987). Handbook of Standards and Resources for Spoken Language Systems. Berlin: Mouton de Gruyter.

The following textbook is recommended for refreshing your memories:

Clark, J. & C. Yallop (1995): An Introduction to Phonetics and Phonology, 2nd Edition, Oxford: Basil Blackwell.
