Think:

• Text constitutes one kind of data scientific study in linguistics.
• Hypertext is text.
• Thererore hypertext constitutes one kind of data for scientific study in linguistics.

The analysis (and production) of actual hypertexts with some practical purpose in mind might well be called `Applied Text Linguistics', or even `Text Technology'.

We will start by looking at

• text types and registers,
• language signs, and texts as signs,
• levels of analysis of text signs, in particular of hypertext signs.

The sources of our data will be the World Wide Web, the graphical user interface (GUI) to the Internet. Many examples can be found on my server.
