Document structure and presentation structure

The relation relating document structure with presentation structure can be called the layout relation.

The layout relation can be taken to be composed of three main sub-relations:

  1. the coding relation, for characters and tokens,
  2. the highlight relation, for local structuring effects,
  3. the split relation, for simultaneous and sequential document splits.

Unlike the static semiotic relations generally addressed in sign models, these relations are dynamic semiotic relations, as shown in the extended multi-dimensional sign model.
