07.05.1998: 3 Presentation level analysis (surface)

The basic model for presentation level text description, in many layout oriented languages, is:

boxes of boxes.

Sometimes the boxes have non-rectangular shapes; in languages with restricted means of expression, such as LaTeX or (even more restricted) HTML, any more complicated presentation structures have to be embedded holistically as graphics.

Hypertexts seen purely from the presentation level point of view will be called simply presentations.

The term presentation is systematically ambigous (like most de-verbal nouns of this kind):
