The intellectual tools used in the analysis of hypertexts are
called
- text markup languages (mainly in text analysis),
- layout languages (mainly in text production).
- text description languages (a more neutral term).
Examples of such languages are
- TeX, and LaTeX, which are commonly used in formatting scientific texts,
- HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language), which is the main text description lang
uage used in online publishing on the Internet,
- and the internal codes used by word processing languages such as WORD.
Tasks:
- Search the web for the definition of HTML (hint: look for the W3 consortium).
- Find out what the W3 consortium is.
- Who invented HTML?
- What is SGML?
- Who invented SGML?
- What is a DTD?
- Who invented the World Wide Web?
- What is the Internet?
- What is the difference between the Internet and the World Wide Web?
