Overview of course

The main goals of the course are to enable participants...

  1. to learn how to use scientific methods for the description of dialogue dat a of different kinds, including digital tape recording, transcription, construction of a lexicon and grammatical analysis and dialogue strategy modelling.
  2. to become acquainted with some of the more important theoretical aspects of dialogue analysis, and to test the theories using the data.
  3. to present descriptions with audio-visual aids, including Internet techniques.

  2. 30.04.1998: Dialogue: scenario design - Lecture (DG)

    Pre-recording phase: Kinds of dialogue; preparation of selected dialogues for recording.

  3. 07.05.1998: Dialogue: recording session - Practical (all)

    Recording phase: Digital recording of a short dialogue.

  4. 14.05.1998: Dialogue: levels of transcription - Practical (all)

    Post-recording phase: linguistic characterisation, lexicon, transcription, annotation, markup

  5. 28.05.1998: Prosody: stress, accent, focus - Lecture (DG)

    Intonation, melodic patterns, emphasis

  6. 04.06.1998: Prosodic analysis - Practical (all)

    Practical transcription and discussion of stress and intonation.

  7. 18.06.1998: Speech act analysis - 10 minute reports

    Intentions and conventions of telling, asking, promising, christening, ...

  8. 25.06.1998: Exchange analysis - 10 minute reports

    Intentions and conventions of refuting, querying, confirming, ...

  9. 02.07.1998: Conversation analysis - 10 minute reports
