Epistemological explanations characterise the world in terms of human knowledge, for example in the case of language:
- FORM: structure and interpretation function
- SUBSTANCE: semantic domain and phonetic domain
- COGNITIVE REALITY: external evidence for form -- `competence', `knowledge', `cognition', `mental models', ... , `neural networks'
- EMPIRICAL REALITY: external evidence for substance -- `performance', `action', `behaviour', `physiological models', ... , `brain models'
