Sign theories

There is a long history of sign theories, from ancient Greece through the Middle Ages until the present time.

Linguistic sign theories in the 20th century have developed from dualistic structural notions notions (de Saussure) through more complex models (Bühler) to speech act and discourse theoretic approaches.

A number of the structural linguistic approaches will be outlined here.
