The Level Ordering Hypothesis

In Lexical Phonology, affixes are not regarded as completely different form, but they are analysed according to similarities in terms of ordering and of their effects on morphophonological alternations. These interdependencies are expressed as Levels consisting of sets of affixation operations paired with relevant phonological rules, shown in Table 2.

The additional structure introduced into the description of derivational morphology by the theory of Lexical Phonology reduces the number of specific conditions on individual affixes. The introduction of generalisations (i.e. classifications of affixes and phonological operations) is matched by a simplification in terms of the number of ad hoc specifications for individual affixes.
