The speech system cascade

The relation between articulatory, acoustic, and auditory phonetics corresponds to a slightly simplified version of the standard communication-theoretic model introduced by Shannon & Weaver (1947, [], shown in the figure, and is sometimes referred to as the `speech chain'.
