The goal of the course is to introduce students to the art and science of
dictionary making, with the following objectives:
- to give participants a thorough understanding of how modern dictionaries a
re made,
- to give participants to analyse and evaluate existing dictionaries and tho
se they make themselves,
- to enable participants to design and construct dictionaries for special pu
rposes, using modern methods.
The methods used in the course will be project-oriented, including
- web and library research into available resources,
- analysis of existing dictionaries,
- creation of small multimedia dictionaries,
- use of standard database software to create lexical databases.
At the end of the course, participants will
- have a working knowledge of lexicography,
- be able to characterise dictionaries according to their main organisationa
l properties,
- have produced a multi-media dictionary with the above information.
