Objectives

The goal of the course is to introduce students to the art and science of dictionary making, with the following objectives:

• to give participants a thorough understanding of how modern dictionaries a re made,
• to give participants to analyse and evaluate existing dictionaries and tho se they make themselves,
• to enable participants to design and construct dictionaries for special pu rposes, using modern methods.

The methods used in the course will be project-oriented, including

• web and library research into available resources,
• analysis of existing dictionaries,
• creation of small multimedia dictionaries,
• use of standard database software to create lexical databases.

At the end of the course, participants will

• have a working knowledge of lexicography,
• be able to characterise dictionaries according to their main organisationa l properties,
• have produced a multi-media dictionary with the above information.
