Phonological Rules

Reading: C&Y Chapter 5, pp. 128-150.

The discussion of phonological rules will be restricted to allophone realisation rules.

The main tasks in this connection are:

  1. Make a list of the phonemes of English.
  2. For each phoneme, make a list of
    1. its distinctive features,
    2. its allphones,
    3. the contexts which determine which allophone occurs.

The notation for summarising these rules will be discussed in class.
