Reading:
C&Y Chapter 2, pp. 10-55.
Work strategy:
- The following tasks are to be dealt with in class:
- Check the web for graphical illustrations of the articulatory tract. You will find graphical illustrations as well as short videos.
- Find German-English translations of the articulators and make these into an illustrated glossary.
- Describe - and practice - the articulations of English and German consonants, and explain the main differences between the two sound systems.
- Why is it harder to practice vowels? Describe - and practice - the articulations of English vowels anyway.
- Make two tables, one for English and one for German, with speech sounds labelling the rows, and articulatory properties labelling the columns:
|
Sound | Voicing | Position of articulation | Manner of articulation | Comment on difficulty |
| p | | | | |
| t | | | | |
| ... | | | | |
| ... | | | | |
| i | | | | |
| e | | | | |
| ... | | | | |
|
... | | | | |
Note: the dotted rows are to be filled in with the other speech sounds of the languages concerned.
- In approximately the last third or quarter of the class, reports will be given on solutions to the tasks.
- In the next class, extensions of these reports based on the textbooks will be presented and discussed.
- At the end of the class there will be further IPA practice.
