Articulatory Phonetics

Reading: C&Y Chapter 2, pp. 10-55.

Work strategy:

  1. The following tasks are to be dealt with in class:

    1. Check the web for graphical illustrations of the articulatory tract. You will find graphical illustrations as well as short videos.
    2. Find German-English translations of the articulators and make these into an illustrated glossary.
    3. Describe - and practice - the articulations of English and German consonants, and explain the main differences between the two sound systems.
    4. Why is it harder to practice vowels? Describe - and practice - the articulations of English vowels anyway.
    5. Make two tables, one for English and one for German, with speech sounds labelling the rows, and articulatory properties labelling the columns:

Sound Voicing Position of articulation Manner of articulation Comment on difficulty
      p
      t
      ...
      ...
      i
      e
      ...
      ...

Note: the dotted rows are to be filled in with the other speech sounds of the languages concerned.
  2. In approximately the last third or quarter of the class, reports will be given on solutions to the tasks.
  3. In the next class, extensions of these reports based on the textbooks will be presented and discussed.
  4. At the end of the class there will be further IPA practice.
