Practical tasks

1. Check the web for information on the International Phonetic Association (when it was founded, by whom, why, its publishing organ,etc.).
2. Check the web for information on the International Phonetic Alphabet.
3. Search the web for the current standard version of the IPA chart.
4. Print a copy of the IPA chart for reference in future class meetings (do not print this in class - we do not have time for this).
5. Form workgroups and practice producing and listening to the IPA symbols.
6. Check the IPA handbook and the web for examples of IPA transcriptions of different languages.
7. Check the web for information on the SAMPA phonetic alphabet, a convenient keyboard-friendly encoding of the IPA, as applied to English, German, or other languages.
