Use of the computer pool

1. Login: phonolog1 - phonolog20
   Password: phonetik
   NOTE: Please stay at the same computer each week.
2. Each user has a folder in which to place the files used in the class (on desktop).
3. There are also shared folders for exchanging information (on desktop).
4. In your own folder, create three folders:
   1. Audio
   2. Graphics
   3. Text
5. When you log out, click Start/Beenden/OK
6. You will need to process some files outside the computer room (at home etc.). There are several ways of doing this:
   • Small files can be copied to a diskette, and for this purpose you will need to bring a diskette along.
   • Copy it using ftp to your account on another computer on the net, if you know how to do this.
   • In general the easiest method: Use a web email address (e.g. web.de) to send yourself an email with the file as an attachment. You can then retrieve this file from the web, store it on the other computer and process it there. To send the modified file back to the computer room, do the same thing, and retrieve it from the web in the computer room and store it on the computer at your desk.
7. You will need to use search engines for the internet search tasks in the class. Each search engine has different advantages and disadvantages. Two of the most suitable engines for our purposes are ``Google'' and ``xrefer''.
