22 May 2002: Simple sentences

Points for discussion:

  1. What parts does a sentence consist of? (Hint: The smallest parts of a sentence are the Parts of Speech, POS.)
  2. What other terms can you find for ``part'' in the sense of ``part of a sentence''?
  3. Pick 3 sentences from the "The Tiger and the Mouse" story, and
    1. label the parts of speech,
    2. label the larger groups containing parts of speech which belong more closely together than to others,
    3. draw a ``tree structure'' to illustrate how they relate to each other.
  4. Search on the web for definitions and illustrations of
    1. Noun Phrase,
    2. Verb Phrase,
    3. Prepositional Phrase
and find examples from the story to illustrate them.
  5. Draw tree structures for each illustration.
  6. List the paradigmatic relations which you have found so far in your 3 sentences.
  7. List the syntagmatic relations which you have found so far in your 3 sentences.
  8. Some harder questions:
    1. Translate your 3 sentences into German,
    2. and do the same for them.
    3. What are the main differences in English and German grammar that you find?
