Points for discussion:
- What parts does a sentence consist of? (Hint: The smallest parts of a sentence are the Parts of Speech, POS.)
- What other terms can you find for ``part'' in the sense of ``part of a sentence''?
- Pick 3 sentences from the "The Tiger and the Mouse" story, and
- label the parts of speech,
- label the larger groups containing parts of speech which belong more closely together than to others,
- draw a ``tree structure'' to illustrate how they relate to each other.
- Search on the web for definitions and illustrations of
- Noun Phrase,
- Verb Phrase,
- Prepositional Phrase
and find examples from the story to illustrate them.
- Draw tree structures for each illustration.
- List the paradigmatic relations which you have found so far in your 3 sentences.
- List the syntagmatic relations which you have found so far in your 3 sentences.
- Some harder questions:
- Translate your 3 sentences into German,
- and do the same for them.
- What are the main differences in English and German grammar that you find?
