There are many "grammar questionnaires" which catalogue the different kinds
of major and minor syntactic and morphological categories which have been
proposed for the languages of the world, and which can be used as a starting
point for grammar documentation.
Tasks:
- Search the web for a grammar questionnaire.
- Search the library for a grammar questionnaire. Hint: Look, for instance, for Lingua Descriptive Studies.
- As a start, check for the following information about your language (with examples):
- What kind of inflexional morphology does it have? (E.g. fusional, agglutinative, prosodic, ...)
- What is the basic syntactic pattern of simple sentences? (E.g. SVO, VSO, SOV, ergative, ...)
- How are declarative, interrogative, imperative, sentences formed?
- How are negative declaratives, interrogatives, imperatives formed?
- How are conjunctions used?
- Is there a distinction between coordinating and subordinating conjunctions?
- What are the basic principles of word formation?
