Zwischenprüfung

The Zwischenprüfung will take place on Thursday, 19 July, 1800h, in C01-273. It will take the form of the addition of a section to the document you have been preparing during the last few weeks of term, on a topic which we will have covered during the class.

You have 2 hours (120 minutes) for this examination.

Your main task in this examination is to prepare a document according to the principles introduced in class, in which the answers to the following questions are contained. You can copy these questions into your document.

At the end of the examination, the documents will be printed, and the electronic versions will be collected.

1. Define the following terms (using appropriate text objects or styles for your definitions):
   1. ``Document Content''
   2. ``Document Architecture''
   3. ``Document Layout''
   4. ``Text object''
2. How do these notions relate to the traditional linguistic notions of ``semantics'', ``syntax'' and ``phonology''?
3. Define ``concordance''
4. Stylesheets:
   1. What is - in very general terms - a `stylesheet', what kind of text objects can one define in a stylesheet, and how is a stylesheet defined in terms or the Document Model discussed in class?
   2. How are stylesheets defined in MS-Word?
   3. What does ``CSS'' mean?
   4. How are stylesheets defined in HTML?
   5. Give a short example of an HTML stylesheet.

5. Prepare a short, interesting presentation in MS-Word, on the topic "A holiday in X" (where X is your ideal place for holidays), and using the document design principles discussed in class.
6. Discuss the Document Architecture, the Layout and the styles you use in the document, summarising the styles as a stylesheet in table form.
7. Discuss a technique for converting the Layout Format of your document into a Layout Format in HTML.
8. HTML only defines individual pages/files. What do you need to add in order to produce an interesting hypertext?
9. Evaluate your document in terms of the evaluation criteria discussed in class.
