Introduction: computerspeak: jargon or terminology?

Summary

Computers are connected with language and languages, including English, in many ways. One thinks of the technical terms used by experts, semi-technical terms used in the popular press, the jargon used by pale sunken-eyed hackers... But there are other kinds of relation. Computers are used to edit and automatically analyse and generate texts and speech, both for practical and scientific purposes. And it is no accident that the symbolic codes used for programming computers are referred to as computer languages, programming languages.

In this session we will start by looking at the first kind of relationship, the vocabulary of computing and computer use in English.
